‘Onion Field’ killer has cancer, now eligible for prison release

Gregory Powell, the infamous “Onion Field” cop killer whose 1963 crime was chronicled in Joseph Wambaugh’s best-selling book, has terminal cancer with less than six months to live, and the California Board of Parole Hearings was weighing Tuesday a compassionate release of him from prison, officials said.
